1972 Carlos Monzon vs 1983 Marvin Hagler?
This would have been a tremendous fight! Monzon and Hagler are two of the greatest middleweight Champions in boxing history. Monzon had 14 sucessful defenses and beat such men as Emile Griffith, Jose Napoles, Tony Mundine, Denny Moyer, Jean Claude Bouttier, and Nino Benvenuti and did not lose a fight for nearly the last 13 years or so of his career, Marvin Hagler had 12 sucessful title defenses and beat such men as John Mugabi, Thomas Hearns, Juan Roldan, Vito Antuofermo, Alan Minter, and Mustafa Hamsho. Carlos Monzon was the taller man at nearly 6'0 compared to Hagler's 5'9" and had a longer reach. Both had outstanding power though Monzon elected to box and counter more than Hagler who was more aggressive fighting behind that southpaw stance of his. Both had great chins and obviously a great will to win. I believe that Hagler would land the better punches early on but Monzon would begin to start controlling the fight with his jab by the middle rounds. Both men would land some powerful punches later in the fight but neither would come close to going down. Monzon would outwork Hagler in the last round and pull out the very close decision victory.
