My kitchen/ family room needs soundproofing?

We have an 8 foot granite island in our kitchen which is next to our family room, together the two rooms i form a big rectangle of 35' by 20' . When someone is in the kitchen running water or talking you can't hear the tv. Any suggestions on what we can do to solve this problem
